Rationale for Classifications
The hierarchy classifications of the packaging text are based on relevance to the consumer in regard to stage of purchase. While the main font Ritter Sport uses is Futura (with the exception of the "Ritter" in the logotype, expiration date, barcode, and Nutrition Facts—set in Helvetica), the brand utilizes variations of the font to bring more emphasis to certain text.
Primary Text consists of essential and identifying product details—brand/product name and description—that initially attract the consumer. On the packaging, the text is largest and/or heaviest in weight and/or given the most decorative font (i.e. the logotype).
Secondary Text contains supporting information that adds context or differentiates the product from others such as the slogan and other details that the brand chooses to emphasize. These pieces of text are considered after the primary text in the consumer's decision to purchase the product. Some of these pieces of text are related to Ritter Sports' sustainability efforts and are displayed in multiple variations of the Futura font, but are given similar emphasis with the text background in a vibrant green which is a stark contrast against the dark brown background of the wrapper. The "Nutrition Facts" title and calorie information could also be classified as secondary because they may play more of a role in the consumer's decision to choose Ritter Sport over other chocolate options in comparison to the more specific nutrition information.
Tertiary Text includes regulatory product information (i.e. manufacturing/import details, barcode) and additional consumer information which would be most relevant when the product has already been purchased and is about to or is being consumed (i.e. use, storage, and disposal instructions). The ingredients of the product would also be considered tertiary because they are mandatory for brand transparency and for specific consumer needs (i.e. allergens). Because the sustainability certification details have already been emphasized in the secondary text, the call to action that supports this point would be classified as tertiary. Visually, most of the tertiary text is set in the smallest font sizes and condensed font variation.
